Cheryl Burgemeister

Cheryl teaches at Waikerie Lutheran PS, South Australia and travels all over Australia and New Zealand presenting workshops on technology in the music classroom with the Music EDnet team.

10+ MUSIC CODING PROJECTS TO CREATE USING SCRATCH & THE MaKey MaKey

Teach your students to code their own music instruments and apps.
Latest research shows coding is an important skill to learn in the primary school years and provides opportunities for cross-curricular learning in mathematics, the sciences and the arts.Scratch is an online, computer based, coding program used to teach the basics of coding games.
Combine your Scratch project with the MaKey MaKey invention kit and it turns any conductible object into an instrument. Appropriate for grades 4+.
Scratch Jr is an iPad app teaching the very basics of coding, appropriate from junior primary +. Learn how to create your own simple iPad instrument.

Note: Scratch and Makey Makey are not compatible with the iPad.

ADDING TECH - REDEFINE THE CURRICULUM RESOURCES SITTING ON YOUR SHELF

Learn how to look at the print resources you already own, or would like to buy, and turn them into an activity using technology. Do you have:
  • 1 or more iPads
  • An Interactive Whiteboard or a Data Projector
  • A computer lab or a trolley of laptops/macbooks
Utilize apps/software/online resources to add depth to your music lesson and bring your activities off the page and onto the screen.

COMPOSING AND CREATING IN CODE ON THE iPAD

Teach your students that coding can be used to compose songs as well as create their own musical instrument.
Hopscotch is a popular classroom coding iPad app used to teach the basics of coding games. Latest research shows coding is an important skill to learn in the primary school years and provides opportunities for cross-curricular learning in mathematics, the sciences and the arts.
Teachers are encouraged to bring their iPad with the Hopscotch app previously installed.
